The Commercial Empire of Raja Gokul Das
The enterprise of Raja Gokuldas, as reflected in Philip McEldowney’s dissertation Colonial Administration and Social Developments in Middle India: The Central Provinces, 1861–1921 (1980), grew into a vast commercial network rooted in Hanumantal. From here, it expanded across Jabalpur, linking trade, credit, and regional markets under one system. More than wealth, it became a structure of influence—where a Marwari merchant-banker’s control over finance, industry, and land quietly shaped the region’s destiny.
